Local Managing Committee

The advisory committee is a controlling authority that consists of eminent people from management , service , education and institute representatives. It functions to promote efficient, effective way of coordinating various activities associated with the institute.


To ensure continues advancement and growth in the institute by formulating various policies, activities , exchange of ideas.

The meeting of members of the Local Managing committee is convened twice a year and aims at monitoring the progress of the institute by periodically reviewing the activities of the institution. Issues regarding admissions, finance, budget, academics, grievances, and student and teachers related matter are addressed.


Shri Samir Somaiya, Chairman

President of Somaiya Trust

Chairman and Managing Director of Godavari Biorefineries Ltd, President of Somaiya Vidyavihar and Chancellor of Somaiya Vidyavihar University.

Samir Somaiya is Chairman and Managing Director of Godavari Biorefineries Ltd., Chairman of The Somaiya Trust, the K J Somaiya Medical Trust, Girivanvasi Educational Trust, Girivanvasi Pragati Mandal, President of Somaiya Vidyavihar & Owner of Kitab Khana. He was the Chairman of the Education Committee of the Indian Merchants Chamber and is a member of the Green Chemistry Initiative of the Scientific Advisors to the Government of India, the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry, the Indian Chemical Council, the Cornell University Council, and the Advisory Board of the School of Chemical Engineering of Cornell University.

He is a Visiting Instructor at the School of Chemical Engineering at Cornell. Samir Somaiya has Bachelors and Masters Degrees in Chemical Engineering from Cornell University and an MBA from Cornell as well. He also has a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from Harvard University.


Dr. Avani Oke, Member Secretary

Principal - K. J. Somaiya College of Nursing

Dr. Avani Oke is working as the Principal of K.J, Somaiya School and College of Nursing since 2014.

Dr Avani Oke has more than 20 years of teaching and about 3 years of clinical experience before climbing the ladder as a Principal.

She started her career as a Tutor In Leelabai Thackersey College of Nursing, SNDT Women's University, Mumbai in 1993 and then worked in reputed hospitals like Cumballa and Hinduja Hospital to gain clinical expertise. She has worked in various capacities like Assistant lecturer, Lecturer and Associate Professor in Leelabai Thackersey College of Nursing. She has also worked as Course Coordinator of Critical Care in Lilavati Hospital. Dr Avani Oke has also worked as an Education Coordinator in Kinderd Hospital, New Jersey, USA.

Dr Avani Oke has completed her Masters in Nursing (Child Health Nursing) and PH.D from Leelabai Thackersey College of Nursing, SNDT Women's University with First class. She also did Post Graduate Diploma in Education Management from SNDT University, Mumbai with A Grade.

She has won Best Teacher Award in 2018 and was honored at the 27th TNAI Biennial Conference held at Loni. She also won laurels for the institute and won the Best MQH practice award in February 2018 at the National conference organized by Ramkrishna Bajaj National Quality award trust. The institute was also featured in Top 20 Most promising nursing colleges in Silicon India magazine under her leadership.

Dr Avani Oke has presented papers at State, National and International Conferences. She has also published papers in various newsletters and journals. She is on the TNAI editorial board and is an editor for the journal “International Journal of Nursing and Occupational Health”.

Dr Avani has been a coordinator, chairperson for organizing conferences, workshops and seminars.


Lt. Gen Jagbir Singh, Special Invitee

Secretary of Somaiya Trust

Lt. Gen. Jagbir Singh is the Secretary for the group of various Trusts under the Somaiya Umbrella. A graduate of the National Defence Academy he was commissioned in the Indian Army in June 1978.

A recipient of four Presidential Awards, he held numerous important appointments during the course of his illustrious career spanning almost four decades. In addition to combat and command assignments at various levels he has also been involved in the conduct of numerous studies associated with formulation of strategy, operational concepts, force structuring and transformation of the Army. An alumnus of the National Defence College, New Delhi, he has been a member of the faculty at the Defence Services Staff College at Wellington.

In his last assignment in service Lt. Gen. Jagbir Singh had administrative command of the Indian Army in Peninsular India which also included a number of training, medical and educational establishments. He holds an MPhil Degree in Defence and Strategic Studies from the Madras University.


Dr. Raghunath K. Shevgaonkar

Dr. Raghunath K. Shevgaonkar, is a scientist and academician who provided dynamic leadership in Engineering Education in India for more than four decades.

An alumnus of, MITS Gwalior, IIT Kanpur, Indian Istitute of Astrophysics/Raman Research Institute Bangalore, and IIT Bombay, his research spans over a wide range of areas like, Radio Astronomy, Fibre Optic Communication, Electromagnetics, and Antennas.


Mr. Sovan Basu

Mr. Sovan Basu has completed Masters in Human resource Management from IISWBM and B.Com (Hons) from St. Xavier’s College, Kolkata. He has close to two decades of valuable experience in various disciplines of HR, as a strategic HR Business partner & leader, by virtue of his association with Global & Indian conglomerates like Unilever, Reliance Power, Wipro, BASF & Novartis in Mumbai.

Prior to joining us, Mr. Basu was associated with a Kolkata based Group of Educational Institutions – RICE India & Adamas University as Group Head – HR & Director - HR. He was heading the HR portfolio of six mutually exclusive legal entities in various domains of education like University, Schools, IT & Ed tech, professional coaching for Administrative Services, offering a holistic solution in the space of education, spanning across different locations in India. He was also a Member of the Governing Board of Admas University.


Ms. Babita Krishanan, Special Invitee

Mrs. Babita Krishnan Working as Head Alumni Relations & Student Affairs, Somaiya Vidyavihar.

A design and hospitality observer & commentator who is currently inclined towards academics & people. She has more than 15 years of experience in the media industry.


Dr. Varsha Phadke, Special Invitee

Dean, K. J. Somaiya Medical College

Dr. Varsha Phadke is the Dean and Head of the Department of Pediatrics and Neonatology and In charge of Pediatric Nephrology Unit.

She is a recognized postgraduate teacher and guide for M.D. (Pediatrics), Maharashtra University of Health Sciences since 2006. She has been an Examiner for M.D.(Pediatrics) examination since 2009.

She has an excellent academic record. She is a merit holder in SSC examination and completed her M.B.B.S., D.C.H. and M.D.(Pediatrics ) from Seth G.S.Medical College and K.E.M.Hospital.


Dr. Minu Ramkrishnan

Medical superintendent in K J Somaiya Medical College and research centre.

She was the head of Ophthalmology department for many years. She is an active member at various conferences and workshops. She has publish many research papers.


Ms. Elizabeth Joseph, Member

Chief of Nursing, Wockhardt Group of Hospitals

Working as Chief of Nursing at Wockhardt hospital. She has completed her PHD in nursing and has also done a Diploma in Hospital Administration at TATA institute of Social Sciences.

She has more than 19 years of experience in the clinical side and has worked as a staff Nurse, Supervisor , Coordinator in various reputed Hospitals all over.

She is a NABH assessor and has taken initiative for various programs in nursing service for quality improvement.


Ms. Mangalam Sriram, Member

Director Academic, Chaitanyam Institute for human excellence

She was ex-principal of Jaslok College of Nursing. Completed her MSC in pediatric Nursing . She has more than 25 years of Experience in clinical and education services.

She is an active member of Student Nurses Association and the Trained Nurses Association of India (TNAI).


Mrs. Belinda Sawant, Member

Chief Nursing Services, Saifee Hospital

Working as Chief Nursing at Saifee Hospital. Completed her Post Graduation in Cardiovascular nursing from SNDT.

She has more than 20 years of experience in the clinical side and has worked as a staff Nurse. Supervisor , Coordinator in various reputed Hospitals all over.

She also is a NABH examiner and has taken initiative to initiate various programs for nursing service improvement. Member of Critical care Nurses Society. She actively participates, organizes and presents papers at various conferences.


Mrs. Phalakshi Manjrekar, Member

Director – Nursing, P. D. Hinduja National Hospital

Dr. Mrs Phalakshi Manjrekar is currently the Nursing Director at P.D. Hinduja Hospital & MRC Mumbai , and her present role encompasses Nursing Service Management, Continuing education and Research.

Here she also is an important representative on numerous committees of the hospital and plays a key role in taking nursing decisions forward.. Her contribution to the Nursing department includes implementation of numerous innovative and best practices in Nursing. She also took additional responsibility to head the nursing division of Hinduja Healthcare Surgical to establish the hospital’s nursing department and implement policies.

In her role as an Executive Director- Nightingale Initiative for Global Health, International Organization with its Head Office in Manitoba, Canada Dr. Mrs Phalakshi Manjrekar is responsible to initiate multiple goals for Nurses globally. She has prominently surveyed the role of Indian Nurses in calamities and in Nursing victims of terminal ill disorders.

She also contributed as a panelist to speak on “ Resources to Empower Nurses “ at the International Women’s World conference at the University of Ottawa, Canada. Her collaboration with University of Cincinnati (USA) and the Sardar Patel University in Gujarat, India for multi factorial research is well known. She has also conferred with global and regional nursing leaders in Canada, Great Britain, across the Commonwealth Countries, and Switzerland —she has also attended World Health Organization briefings in Geneva and at WHO SEARO – New Delhi.

Her contribution as a keynote speaker on nursing in the Commonwealth Nursing and Midwifery Federation, London in 2014 and also in 2016 on Indian Nursing is well appreciated. She also teamed the University of Missouri, USA and Hinduja Hospital Nursing on a knowledge sharing partner research module. She has contributed as an Nursing Author on International Forum amongst Key Nurses in two books for Springer USA publications. Her presentation at the ICN Barcelona on Nurses to promote hygiene is well appreciated.


Mr. Faraz Kagalwalla, Invitee

Mr. Faraz Z Kagalwalla has joined as the Chief Finance Officer, Somaiya Vidyavihar. He is a seasoned professional with over 24 years of experience in Finance and has expertise in the areas of Finance Management, Legal Functions, Audits and Compliance.

He has worked with various companies like Zyfin Research Private Ltd., Boston Analytics Pvt. Ltd., The Times of India Group etc.

He has also handled the Secretarial & Legal Functions for India & US Operations at Boston Analytics and has also worked closely with Ernst & Young team for de-merger of Companies.

He has dealt with the compliance guidelines issued by Audit Bureau of Circulation (ABC) during the audit conducted for Times of India, The Economics Times and Maharashtra Times.

Mrs. Snehal Kadam, Member

Matron, K.J.Somaiya School of Nursing

Working as a Matron in Somaiya General Hospital since 2019. Prior experience in state Government communicable disease hospital in Mumbai as a Staff Nurse for 8 years.

Worked for 3 years in the UK and then in Seven Hills Hospital, Mumbai as a Nurse Manager and as a Nursing Lead - Mumbai region at nightingales Home Health Services.


Dr. Jayashree Salvi, Member

Jayashree Salvi is working as the Vice Principal of K.J, Somaiya School and College of Nursing. She has more than 19 years of teaching and about 2 years of clinical experience.

Working as a Professor and has completed her Phd from datta Meghe Institute of Medical Sciences, Wardha. She has completed her Diploma in Office Automation from NIIT, Bhilai.

Diploma in Hospital Administration (DHA) from Institute of Health Care Administration, Chennai,2005. Dr Sushma is a trained Sujok therapist and yoga trainer.

She has received the Best teacher award by the National teachers association in 2021. Received prizes for research paper presentation. She has also been a chairperson, organizing Secretary for various workshops, conferences and seminars. She has published research papers in National and International journals.


Mrs. Smita Barmase, Member

Mrs. Smita Barmase working in K.J.Somaiya College of Nursing as an Associate Professor.She joined this institution in 2011.

She has done her master in Paediatric Nursing from Bombay Hospital College of Nursing. She has a total 3yrs of clinical and 8 yrs of teaching experience. She has also done certificate course in SUJOK THERAPY in 2018.

Received award for “Excellence in teaching ”on Founders day by K.J.Somaiya Trust. Won first prize in scientific poster presentation at State and National level. She has done much research publication in national and international journals.


Ms. Jovita Annie Alex, Member

Completed her Postgraduate in medical surgical nursing ( critical care nursing) from Maharashtra University of Health Science. Has worked as a staff nurse in the Intensive cardiac care unit.

She has completed certification in management in Nursing Education, NHCA (SINGAPORE). She has presented and published research papers at various forums and also participated in workshops, conferences in various capacities.

He joined as Clinical Instructor in 2007 and was promoted to Senior Tutor in 2015. He has an enriched experience in Community and has completed M.Sc Nursing in Mental Health Nursing.
